The Ombudsperson’s Institution participated in the Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance of Human Rights Institutions
Geneva, 1 April 2026 – The General Assembly of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) GANHRI 2026, co-organized with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), was held at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 30 March to 1 April 2026.
Over 90 NHRIs discussed Human Rights priorities for 2026 and actions that strengthen the Global Alliance of NHRI’s.
The President of GANHRI, Ms. Amina Bouayac, emphasized in her speech that Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies are transforming the world at a pace that could challenge the ability of human rights defenders to respond. Referring to the GANHRI Assembly and the Annual Conference and other accompanying activities within the framework of this event, she emphasized that these meetings serve to ensure that HRIs are prepared to contribute and lead the necessary and appropriate response.
In the session on sharing experiences and knowledge, discussions focused on the rights of people on the move and the critical work of NHRIs to protect them. Emphasis was placed on independent monitoring, early warning and accountability in transit and border contexts, as well as inclusion and access to healthcare, education, housing, social protection and decent work.
The GANHRI General Assembly was followed by the Annual Conference, which focused on the topic “The Role of NHRIs in the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights in the Digital Space”.
Within the framework of the GANHRI Annual Meeting, as is usual practice, the GANHRI Bureau meeting was also held, as well as meetings of the regional HRI networks covering Asia Pacific, Africa, America and Europe.

At the annual meeting of GANHRI, which was also attended by the Kosovo Ombudsman Institution, members, partners and observers of this global international organization, which operates under the umbrella of the United Nations, have the opportunity to reflect on the work and assess progress, lessons learned from experience, as well as other human rights issues, in complex contexts, with an emphasis on the developments the world is currently going through today.
