
Discussion on human rights in Gjilan
Pristina, April 22, 2024 – Ombudsperson, Naim Qelaj met representatives of civil organizations, human rights activists and representatives of local institutions, from all communities from the Gjilan region. The meeting was organized by the NGO “ACDC”.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss with the Ombudsperson, the situation of human rights at the local level, the problems faced by the citizens and the needs to be addressed; respecting the rights of non-majority communities as well as strengthening the cooperation between the Ombudsperson’s Institution and civil society organizations in an effort to protect and promote freedoms and human rights.
The Ombudsperson emphasized that such tables have already created a platform where it is possible to talk with all communities about the concerns and problems they encounter in their daily lives.
He explained his mandate and powers, including the institution’s work and activities in the protection and promotion of human rights. Mr. Qelaj emphasized that the biggest complaints of the citizens are related to the delays of the judicial procedures, the non-return of answers from the public institutions to the questions of the citizens and, among other things, the right to property.
The Ombudsperson said that the recent murders of women, highlighting it as a disturbing phenomenon in society and requested that laws protecting victims of domestic violence be strictly implemented.
The participants at this table raised issues such as problems of access to public spaces and facilities for persons with disabilities, challenges in the work of social work centers.
