Pristina, February 21st, 2024 – The Ombudsperson has followed with concern the news reported by the media regarding the loss of life of the four-year-old child from Gjakova.

The right to life is a universal right for all human beings, and as such is protected by the Constitution and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Other human rights exist only when the right to life exists.

Protecting the child’s life is the main obligation for any person, institution or other body. Considering the sensitivity of the case, the Ombudsperson calls on the institutions to take the necessary actions as soon as possible according to the legislation in force.

In this case, the Ombudsperson, in accordance with the constitutional role and powers and responsibilities defined by the Law on the Ombudsperson, will conduct investigations related to the case and will monitor it closely and continuously in order to ensure that all responsible institutions are undertaking the measures defined by law.
