Statement of the Ombudsperson on the occasion of the National Day of Missing Persons
Pristina, April 27th 2021 – The Ombudsperson, Mr. Naim Qelaj commemorates this day for the missing persons and the serious condition of their families who seek to know about the fate of their loved ones.
Mr. Qelaj stressed that even after 22 years the families of missing persons do not know about the fate of their loved ones. This is an indicator of improper reaction by the state and responsible bodies to put pressure on the responsible parties and provide data on their fate.
Family members have the right to know about their loved ones and will find relief only when they know about their fate. Today, the families of the victims need to end this tragic and painful past and be allowed to live like others by providing them with information and justice.
Kosovo institutions must work harder in this direction and end the suffering of these families, the fate of the missing must be a priority in every institutional agenda, in every meeting and in every case to be the first condition and address.
Since the end of war in Kosovo, 1639 persons are still unaccounted for.
