Reaction of Ombudsperson related to physical assaults against citizens
26/02/2021
Pristina, 25 February 2021 – The Ombudsperson, Mr. Naim Qelaj expresses his concern and condemns the latest cases of physical violence committed against the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
Mr. Qelaj expresses his concern about the physical attack on journalist Visar Duriqi. This act presents an attack on freedom of expression as a fundamental right in a democratic society. Physical assaults, verbal threats and intimidation of journalists constitute human rights violations. In recent years, many countries have worked together to set the highest standards with the broad character of guaranteeing freedom of expression and freedom of media pluralism.
Mr. Qelaj also mentions the case of the physical attack on the young man, Nikola Rasic, which occurred on February 22, 2021, in Llapnasella, and considers it unacceptable for our country. Citizens must live freely and securely as one of the fundamental human rights.
Mr. Qelaj asks the law enforcement mechanisms to treat these cases with priority and seriousness, re-emphasizing the obligation of the state to ensure the life, health and physical integrity of citizens and demands that all measures be taken to prevent such cases in the future.
