Ombudsperson’s statement regarding Children’s Universal Day

Since 1999, November 20 marks Children’s Universal Day which coincides with the anniversary of the date when the General Assembly of United Nations ratified Declaration on the Rights of a Child, in 1959 as well as with the Convention on the Rights of a Child in 1989.

Marking of this day was intended to encourage togetherness and awareness among children as well as promotion of their welfare. In function to this purpose, the Ombudsperson Institution (OI) has intensified activities regarding provision of information to children regarding guaranteed rights and freedoms, as well as the role entrusted to the OI in protection and promotion of human rights. From 2 November this year, OI has undertaken specific information campaign for primary and secondary school children through which the 26 anniversary of the Convection on the Rights of a Child  is marked, which represents most comprehensive document of Protection of Children’s Rights in the world. During these days OI representatives met with pupils from Prishtina, Mitrovica, Gjakova,  Peja, Dragash and Ferizaj and the opportunity has been given to children to express their concerns, thoughts and their stands regarding issues they encounter in their daily life, not only at school but generally within the entire surrounding where they perform their activities and usually spend their time.

Of a great concern for the Ombudsperson remains unfavorable situation of Children’s rights in Kosovo, including here issues concerning their health and wellbeing, parental care, violation, dangerous child labor, education, their exclusion from decision making processes, etc. Therefore, the Ombudsperson requests from institutions, organizations and all mechanisms working for children and with children, to increase efforts and commitment in order to improve situation in respect and overall accomplishment of children’s rights, actually improvement of children’s general position.
