PRESS RELEASE REGARDING LAND SLIDE IN AREAS OF MUHAXHIRVE AND ARBERIA IN PRISHTINE

14th of June 2013 – the Ombudsperson expresses his concern regarding the situation created after successive land slide in Prishtina Municipality, in the area of Arberia on the 10th of June as well as on 11th of June in Muhaxhir area.

Upon obtaining information on the danger to which the citizens of these areas are directly exposed, Ombudsperson’s collaborates immediately visited these two areas. They inspected them and noticed that public road has been severely damaged; a part of it was cracked and slipped as well as it was very close to the main road, pavement and other residential buildings all over. Main water pipe was gravely damaged through this improper and uncontrolled intervention of the operator, leaving the citizens without water for 48 hours.
Land slide in two areas has impinged public safety and the citizens’ rights on safe and clean environment, the right on privacy and family, the freedom of movement as well as the property right.
The Ombudsperson Institution (OI) calls upon competent bodies, that is, Prishtina Municipality as well as the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning to abide by Law on Spatial Planning and Construction and set the balance between urban development of the city and efficient enjoyment of the citizens’ rights, by respecting the right to environment, the right to property as well as right to free movement. OI also invites relevant bodies to respect and protect law and order, to undertake indispensable measures versus those responsible for the situation created.
