THE OMBUDSPERSON REQUESTS SHUT DOWN OF THE CAMP ‘FUSHA E PAJTIMIT”
3 February 2012- The Ombudsperson, Mr. Sami Kurteshi visited neighbourhood “Fusha e Pajtimit” in Prishtina where are placed 17 families. The purpose of this visit was to see the situation closely as the temperatures nowadays are very low.
”Such poor living conditions of these people are worrying and unacceptable. There living conditions are below the level of dignity. Ina place where there is no dignity, it is not possible to move forward and to speak about human rights!” emphasized the Ombudsperson facing with the situation in this neighbourhood.
Containers that almost collapsed because of the snow, people suffering of various disease, among them some old people, cold, hunger and humidity in their living environments are the findings that every visitor may conclude once it arrives at these barracks which are patched and assembled by various materials.
Resolving the issue of habitation for these people is a matter of existence. Most of these families are living under these conditions since 5 or 6 years. Although, there were many calls addressing the competent authorities, especially the Municipality of Prishtina to shut the camp down, the authorities are continuing to bring new families in the camp.
“Institutional disregard now is something that cannot be justified. This camp must be shut down!” said Mr. Kurteshi who called on the institutions at the central and local level to find solution as soon as possible. The Ombudsperson visited this neighbourhood also during the summer. Since then the temperatures have changed from one extreme level to another, but nothing has changed as regards the life of these people.
The witnesses of this difficult situation, with the dimensions of institutional and human ignorance were also journalists who accompanied the Ombudsperson during this visit.
