CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE ROUND TABLE “THE OMBUDSPERSON-HUMAN RIGHTS-MEDIA”
During the round table “THE OMBUDSPERSON-HUMAN RIGHTS-MEDIA”, held on 1 November 2011 in Prishtina, which was organised by the Ombudsperson Institution (OIK), was discussed the issue of cooperation between the OIK and media. At the end of the round table were drawn several conclusions and recommendations, which may serve for setting up a strategy and communication plan for accomplishment of the OIK mission, which is protection and promotion of the human rights and freedoms.
CONCLUSIONS:
• Close cooperation between the Ombudsperson and media was lacking in the past.
• Promotion of the Ombudsperson`s work was deficient.
• Lack of meetings with media was evident,
• No cases that could be made public were offered to media,
• Media was not used in order to make public pressure for various cases,
• Information regarding work and activities of the Ombudsperson was insufficient,
• To date, the image of the Ombudsperson in media has been more the image of a victim than the image of victim protection institution,
• Continuous complains regarding access to public documents in the institutions, were not formalized by filing complaints with the OIK in written.
RECOMMANDATIONS:
• To intensify mutual cooperation between the OIK and media,
• To work more in promoting the work of the OIK,
• To continue with such meetings, which would impact the elimination of eventual obstacles for mutual cooperation,
• Media to give its contribution in implementation of the Ombudsperson`s recommendations,
• The Ombudsperson to introduce its work and engagements in media,
• The Ombudsperson to make public the cases for whose resolution media pressure would have a positive effect,
• The Ombudsperson to place on the media positively resolved cases in order to encourage all parties concerned,
• The Ombudsperson should not appear as a victim, but it should protect victims,
• The Ombudsperson to create special relations with media,
• The Ombudsperson should be closer to the citizens,
• Media and the OIK to be partners in protecting and promoting the human rights,
• The Ombudsperson and media to strengthen the voices of those who are vulnerable,
• Media representatives should lodge written complaints to the Ombudsperson regarding their problems to have access to public documents,
• The official web page of the Ombudsperson should be updated continuously with the information on the work of the institution and cases handled,
• The Ombudsperson`s Media Office should increase its activities.
