Eighteen months of silence: Acting Ombudsperson issues report on Skenderaj/Srbica and Mitrovicë/Mitrovica Municipal Authorities’ failure to co-operate

22/05/2007

The Acting Ombudsperson issued today a special report on the failure of the Skenderaj/Srbica and Mitrovicë/Mitrovica Municipal Authorities to co-operate with the Ombudsperson Institution in Kosovo.
By repeatedly failing to reply to the Institution’s requests for information over the past year-and-a-half, the authorities of both municipalities have demonstrated a flagrant disregard for Kosovo’s laws and for the powers vested in the Ombudsperson.
Addressed to the Assembly of Kosovo, this Special Report calls on the Minister for Local Government and the Minister for Science, Education and Technology to ensure that the Skenderaj/Srbica and Mitrovicë/Mitrovica Municipal Authorities “respond without any further delay to the previous and future requests and interventions of the Ombudsperson Institution”.
Local authorities’ obligations to the Institution are provided for under UNMIK Regulation No. 2006/06 on the Ombudsperson Institution in Kosovo as well as The Constitutional Framework for Provisional Self-Government in Kosovo.
