Pristina, September 14, 2026 – The Ombudsperson, Mr. Naim Qelaj, accompanied by his staff, met with newly appointed judges to discuss human rights, the justice system, and the role and work of the Ombudsperson Institution.

At the start of the meeting, the Ombudsperson outlined the history of the Institution, highlighting how it has consolidated over the years and increasingly strengthened its role in protecting and promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Ombudsperson went on to present the Institution’s mandate, role, and activities, placing special emphasis on issues related to the judicial system. He underscored the importance of the judiciary in protecting human rights and ensuring standards for a fair and impartial trial.

In this context, the Ombudsperson also addressed citizen complaints regarding delays in court proceedings, emphasizing the need to increase court efficiency and ensure the delivery of justice within a reasonable timeframe. During the meeting, the Ombudsperson explained other ways the Institution interacts with the justice system, including submitting opinions (amicus curiae), issuing recommendations to public institutions regarding the fulfillment of obligations to prohibit discrimination and ensure equality, and referring cases to the Constitutional Court.

The newly appointed judges had the opportunity to discuss with the Ombudsperson and ask questions about other areas within the Institution’s mandate, with a particular focus on matters related to the judiciary and the protection of human rights.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Ombudspeson congratulated the newly appointed judges on their new roles, wishing them success in discharging their responsibilities and in serving justice and the citizens.
