Statement of the Ombudsperson on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day

Pristina, 3 May 2026 – On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Ombudsperson recalls the importance of free and independent media as an important pillar for a democratic society. Freedom of expression and information are fundamental human rights, guaranteed by the Constitution and international instruments.

The work of journalists is a public good and the obstacles placed on their engagement are unacceptable. A safe environment for journalists and other media workers is a prerequisite for the exercise of these rights and for the fair information of the public.

The Ombudsperson expresses his concern about any form of threats and pressures, as well as trends that limit the right to access public documents and information.

The Ombudsman calls on all public institutions to fully implement the standards for access to public documents and transparency. He also calls on the media to continue to exercise their profession with integrity and responsibility.

The Ombudsman remains committed to protecting and promoting freedom of expression and the right to information, as irreplaceable values ​​for a democratic society.
