Ombudsman explained his role and mandate to the newly elected judges

Pristina 12the of December 2021 – The Ombudsperson’s Institution (OI) in cooperation with the Academy of Justice organized an information meeting with the newly appointed judges on the role and mandate of the Ombudsperson.

The Ombudsperson, Mr. Naim Qelaj spoke about the history of the institution and in particular about its role and mandate. He congratulated the judges on their new assignment and wished them success in their work.

Mr. Burim Tahiri, Senior Legal Adviser in the Legal Affairs Department at the OIK, explained the procedures for investigating complaints on citizens’ allegations of human rights violations, up to the preparation of recommendations for such cases.

Mrs. Shqipe Mala, director of the national mechanism for the prevention of torture spoke about the mandate and work of this mechanism which drafts and publishes reports with recommendations, resulting from the handling of complaints and requests and regular and unannounced visits to all places where persons are held deprived of liberty.

Mr. Isa Hasani, director of the department for receiving and reviewing complaints in the OIK, spoke about the relationship between the OIK and the judiciary, and also explained the procedures for receiving complaints and reviewing them if complaints, requests or notifications received are within the competencies and responsibilities of the OIK.

The Academy of Justice organizes a one-year training for newly appointed judges, where in addition to practical training in the courts, judges who are attending the initial training make visits to various institutions of the Republic of Kosovo.
